Galveston Island Beach Trip

In the Barbie movie, Ken says, “Actually, my job—it’s just beach.”

I think about that line when my friend Audrey and I take a girls’ beach trip. But less, “My job is beach,” and more, “This is how I beach.” For me (with her!), this means sampling local coffee shops, lounging at historic hotels, learning island history through books and tours, chatting with indie shop owners, lunching on fish tacos, and watching gulf waves—under ample shade protection, preferably around sunset hour.

My husband recently indulged me in a weekend trip to learn how I beach. (His version usually includes fishing rods, which he left at home.) I showed him my favorites spots, but swapped out boutique shopping for a morning at the Galveston Island State Park. The photos below of egrets and ibises roosting in trees is not from the park, but the neighborhood of Evia; it fascinates me to see them congregating among the charming coastal homes and painted decks!

My current favorite places in Galveston are:

Grand Galvez: whether for an overnight stay, the spa, Founders Bar, or coffee with a scenic view. They seasonally offer daytime access to the new Gigi Beach Club (pictured above with coral umbrella)

The Tremont House: also for an overnight stay, the historic Toujouse bar (physical bar crafted in c. 1894) which infuses their own house gin, or the rooftop restaurant

Hotel Lucine: renovated to evoke a 1960s feel, the den and pool make me feel as though I’ve stepped onto a movie set. They often host live music at the rooftop bar overlooking the Gulf. You can order a lovely picnic lunch (or breakfast) to-go at the bar, and I believe they offer daytime pool passes.

Palmetto Osteria: for dinners with tranquil sunset views and absolutely perfect craft cocktails

Porch Cafe: casual, comfortable, and worth a trip for the chocolate panna cotta alone

Katrina Howarth Boutique: half-boutique, half-art gallery, this romantic shop is run by the artist/owner

Then & Now Bookshop: recently opened by a retired elementary school teacher, and very hospitable. I could stay all day!

Fish Co. Tacos: the best fish tacos in Texas

Maceo: the best muffalettas in Texas

Hearsay on the Strand: allergen-friendly menu, gorgeous and delicious

Beachtown: for sandy walks along the shore; may need to dodge low-key photo sessions

There’s so much to do and see in Galveston, my list keeps growing!

How, and where, do you beach?
